 | 01.21.06 | Writing and Acting for the StageGuyWriters' January quarterly event has held at Magnet with an attendance of about thirty people. The gathering was an evening of fun gay theatre with a theme of "Collaboration: Writing & Acting for Stage."
A panel consisted of five first-rate gay playwrights and actors discussing and reading their work. The panel included Cameron Weston, Donald Currie, Garret Groenveld, Leo Lawhorn, and Tom Kelly. The group performed a reading of Ton Kelly’s ‘Homo Panic’ and Garret Groenveld’s ‘A Little Death’. Thanks to the panel members for donating their time and words of wisdom.
Cameron Weston - On stage, Cameron was most recently featured as Senator Del Grasso in the 42nd Street Moon production of Red Hot & Blue! Other groups he has appeared with include Theatreworks, New Conservatory and Custom Made, to name a few. His Bay Area roles include Simon Hutton in What’s Wrong with Angry?, Joe Frisco in Dirty Blonde, George Bush in Bye-Bye, bin Laden!, Fredrik in A Little Night Music, Benjamin in Animal Opera, Senex in A Funny Thing…, and Megapong in Rocket Girl. His on-camera work includes two episodes of Man, Moment, Machine on the History Channel, numerous commercials and the upcoming science fiction film Eye on You. His website is www.cameronweston.com.
Donald Currie – Donald Currie is a third generation San Franciscan. He attended SF State University and Stanford, getting a BA in Theatre Arts. When the 60s hit he and a pack of friends formed a theatre group/commune called The Gestalt Fool Theatre Family, perfoming at many seminal 60s events, including at the Fillmore Auditorium with the Greatful Dead. Out of the Gestalt Fool he formed a musical group called Don and Pilar which toured the state for five years and broke up when Donald started Western Onion Singing Telegrams. When AIDS hit in the early 80s the crisis led him out of performing and into studying Chinese
medicine. After a 25 year hiatus Donald retuned to writing and performing with a one man show called "Sex and Mayhem" which he performed at New Conservatory. He has since performed in "Beautiful Child" and "The Philanderer" at Theatre Rhino.
Garret Jon Groenveld - Award-winning Garret Jon Groenveld has taught playwriting at SFSU and Harvey Milk Academy. His play Missives world premieres at Theatre Rhinoceros from Oct. 27 to Nov. 27, 2005. He has an MFA in Poetry and an MA in Playwriting from SFSU.
Leo Lawhorn - Leo recently completed the role of Flan in the Actors Ensemble of Berkley production of Six Degrees of Separation. Also, Leo has been in Tom Kelly's Significant Others in New Conservatory Theatre, Killing My Lobster Bruno's Island New Plays Festival, and Counting the Ways by San Francisco, Fringe Festival, just to mentioned a few roles.
Tom W. Kelly - Tom W. Kelly is a playwright and freelance writer living in San Francisco. His plays have been produced in SF, NYC, LA, Key West, Seattle, and Austin. Most recently, his full-length Significant Others ran for 8 weeks at the New Conservatory Theatre as part of their Pride Season. His one-act "The Virgin Tango" was part of an evening titled Homosexual Acts at The Duplex in NYC. To date, six one-act plays have been published. He has co-taught five sessions of intermediate to advanced playwriting (with playwright Garret Groenveld) at the New Conservatory Theatre. He is also a freelance writer and has written for numerous magazines and newspapers on a freelance basis, including feature articles and reviews of books, art, theatre, travel, dining, assorted community interest stories, critical essays, and short stories. He is currently the senior theatre reviewer for the SF Bay Times. He spends way too much time in dark theatres, and should really get out into the sun more often. |
