06.10.06 | National Queer Arts Festival

In June, GuyWriters held a literary reading at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center as part of the National Queer Arts Festival. The reading, which was titled "Men on Men: Connecting with the Masculine" and showcased eight GuyWriters members and special guests Justin Chin and Marvin K. White, was a big success! "The event," wrote Mark Reardon in the Bay Area Reporter, "introduced us to a solid batch of local gay writers, all of whom read well-crafted, personal works, rendered in styles from soft-spoken to dramatic….It was [Chin's and White's] starpower that brought me to the show, but I would have easily been satisfied with the GuyWriters crew alone."

Organized and moderated by GuyWriters Co-Founder Anthony Williams, the event was attended by sixty audience members mesmerized by the poetry, prose and plays of GuyWriters members M.S. Allen, Louis Anthes, Donald Currie, Andrew Demcak, Richard Kane, Vincent Meis, Jay Siegel and Matthew Graham Smith. The evening was by turns bittersweet, erotic and hilarious particularly the latter during Justin Chin's piece on a recent break-up!

The evening was capped off by a group recitation of Swisher Suite, a five-part choral poem commissioned from poet Marvin K. White. Said the BAR of the evening's finale: "…all the readers took part as though they were verbal Rockettes, taking turns tossing out the words, batting them back and forth, taking center stage with them and rousing the crowd with choreographed verbal high-kicking. It was an unforgettable moment in the San Francisco poetry scene."

GuyWriters wants to give a special thank you to the Queer Cultural Center for giving us a generous grant to fund this landmark event!
