 | GuyWriters at NQAF 2007At the 2007 National Queer Arts Festival in San Francisco, GuyWriters presented a literary reading with 18 gay male writers, musicians and artists to an enthusiastic packed house. The evening was entitled "Is Gay Male Culture Dead? A Futuristic Happening of New Words, New Music and New Art!", and was presented at the Jon Sims Center for the Arts in a room decorated to resemble a futuristic space temple.
Highlights included Cedric Brown's clever meditation on the show title, Louis Anthes' outrageuos group chant, Jaime Cortez's hilarious slide show, Philip Huang's dramatic soliloquy, Derek Lassiter's gentle romantic ballad, Donald Currie's send up of the gay body, and a special group reading by the poets of GuyWriters that skewered just about every sacred cow the gay community has to offer! Andrew Demcak, Ryan Owens, Jair Trice, Larry Kaplun, Jay Siegel, Rafaelito Sy and GuyTiphane rounded out the show, which was produced by Anthony Williams.
The 60 audience members flirted with each other during the intermission as they sipped wine and munched on home-made treats and took in Mac MacNamara's colorful homoerotic gay quilts, Troung Tran's thought-provoking art, Richard Kane's cuddly found object sculptures and Jim Coughenour's witty cartoons. Audience members also took home with them a GuyWriters' poetry chapbook and a funkalicious CD mix by djESHU.
Thanks to everyone who attended this full-on affirmation of gay men's creativity! |
