 | 10.02.05 | An Evening with Terrence McNallyGuyWriters’ First Fundraiser and Crucifixion Preview: Two Smash Hits! Sunday October 2nd was a GuyWriters-filled day for many of us. First, twenty-two members of our organization and their friends attended the preview of Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally’s scorching new play, Crucifixion. Following the performance, Mr. McNally, New Conservatory Theatre’s artistic director Ed Decker, and the entire cast assembled for a stimulating exchange of ideas about the piece, which was written with these specific actors in mind.
Then that evening, GuyWriters held its first annual fundraiser at Wilde Oscar's in the Mission, "An Evening with Terrence McNally." More than forty members and their friends assembled for the benefit. After an introduction by GuyWriters’ Steering Committee Member and event organizer Anthony Williams, McNally answered audience questions about stereotypes in gay writing, the "gay writer" label, and influences on his writing. He also talked about the discipline needed for writing, and ended his appearance with an inspirational exhortation for all of us to keep putting pen to page.
The second part of the evening included an auction and raffle conducted by GuyWriters’ member John Fagundes in high style. John involved audience members in the drawing of the numbers for the raffle, which allowed quite a few benefit attendees to walk away with prizes, including gift certificates from A Different Light Bookstore and Books Inc., a Zenith DVD Player, and ten certificates for free massage sessions. The auction was wildly successful: the handwritten Gore Vidal rejection letter, the handcrafted GuyWriters quilt, and the A. Jay erotic drawing.
GuyWriters would like to thank Terrence McNally for being with us for this wonderful evening! |
